The idea
BTC22 in Innsbruck was my very first Bitcoin event. A Twitter post then sparked the idea of doing something similar with Bitcoin.

The very first euro bill€
The first version was made for the event “Bitcoin im Ländle” – as a surprise for all guests. The bill was a smash hit, and the first ideas for developing it further were born right there.

A dedicated edition for Dezentralshop, a year later as a dollar bill too.

For BTC23 in Innsbruck came a much more refined version – for the first time with a QR code and a bitcoin gift: anyone can receive their first satoshis straight into their own wallet.

An education project with its own bills. Bitcoin Block Stans, near Lucerne in Switzerland, followed in November.

Genesis: the first dollar bill$
By popular demand came the dollar bill, first as the “Genesis” edition at btcprague. The community chose the claim on the back: “IN BITCOIN WE TRUST”.

For the first time anyone can buy the bills: from September 25 in the shop of the #1 Bitcoin Hotel Princess, from November at Copiaro too. The idea was born together with Ronny from Copiaro at btcprague 2024.

Silplebster: premiere in francs€$CHF
For Silplebster, a private New Year’s Eve party of Einundzwanzig Saarland in Trier, the bills came out in all three currencies for the first time. Since then there have been beautiful, authentic Swiss franc bills.

And today?
By now a great many Bitcoiners carry the bills in their wallets, and some have even become passionate collectors. The bills travel all around the world, even to faraway countries – sometimes people send me photos from there. That makes me really happy. And when I meet someone new and it turns out they know the bills, I sometimes keep it to myself that I am the one behind them.

How does the payout work?
The sats come from my own Lightning node. Each request creates a single-use withdrawal link with a fixed amount. It runs on the open-source faucet “value4value” by DrShift – don’t trust, verify: GitHub.
The pot is empty?
I fund this project out of my own pocket and through sponsoring, so there is a daily limit of gifts. Just come back the next day – each wallet can claim the gift once.
Is this counterfeit money?
No. The bill is a promotional item and art object: every detail, however small, has been clearly changed – above all the big 21. It is not meant to pass as real money and is obviously not a means of payment. As long as nobody tries to circulate it as real money, owning or producing it is not a criminal offense.
